Mary Ann Tolbert concludes that parables straddle the border between the illustrative and the representational.
Blending the mimetic and the symbolic, the fractured realism of the parables encourages the interpreter to search for other levels of reference, to search, in terms of our two models, for the second-order signified or the unexpressed tenor of the epiphoric-type movement. The presence of the extraordinary within the ordinary, the typicality of the characters, and the indefinite tone of the stories together develop that puzzling, teasing quality that marks the parables as polyvalent forms eliciting multiple interpretations.[27]
